π Oakland County Dog License β Key Facts (2026)
Oakland County's Unique 2026 Licensing Situation
Oakland County β home to Auburn Hills, Pontiac, Troy, Royal Oak, and dozens of other Metro Detroit communities β transitioned to a new DocuPet-powered licensing system in December 2025. This transition created an unusual situation for 2026: the county extended all 2025 license tags through March 31, 2026, meaning dogs with 2025 Oakland County tags were legally licensed into Q1 of 2026 without needing to renew immediately.
As of April 1, 2026, 2025 tags are no longer valid. The renewal window for 2026 licenses at current pricing ($15 altered / $25 intact) runs through June 1, 2026 β a much later deadline than most Michigan counties, and far later than Ohio's January 31 cutoff. After June 1, all licenses become delinquent at a flat $40 regardless of spay/neuter status.
Oakland County's DocuPet system includes HomeSafeβ’ 24/7 lost pet service at no extra charge β meaning if your dog goes missing and someone finds them, a dedicated dispatch staff can help reunite you using the tag's linked pet profile. Optional designer tags (at extra cost) donate 20% of the purchase price to Oakland County Animal Shelter through DocuPet's Safe&Happy Fund.

Newly Acquired Dogs and Michigan's 30-Day Rule
Michigan law requires all dogs four months of age or older to be licensed. If you adopt, purchase, or receive a dog, you must license it within 30 days of acquisition. New residents who move to Oakland County with a valid Michigan dog license from another county have 30 days to transfer; no charge applies within that window. If you're a new Michigan resident moving from another state, you must license immediately β no grace period for out-of-state arrivals.
Oakland County: Cities With Their Own Systems
Some incorporated cities in Oakland County handle dog licensing independently rather than through the county system. The City of Pontiac is the primary example β Pontiac residents must purchase their license through the Pontiac City Treasurer (47450 Woodward Avenue, (248) 758-3062) rather than through the county portal. If you live in Pontiac or another incorporated city, confirm whether your city operates its own licensing system before applying through the county portal.
