📋 Michigan Dog Licensing — Statewide Facts (2026)
How Michigan Dog Licensing Works
Michigan requires all dogs four months of age or older to be licensed annually. The fee structure is set county-by-county (unlike Pennsylvania's statewide flat fee), and most Michigan counties significantly discount the fee for spayed or neutered dogs — a deliberate policy to encourage responsible pet ownership and reduce shelter intake.
The standard renewal window runs December 1 through February 28. After the deadline, fees double at most counties, and licenses are only available at the County Treasurer's office (agents stop selling after the deadline). Oakland County is an exception in 2026: due to a system transition, all 2025 tags were extended through March 31, 2026, with current pricing available through June 1, 2026.
Michigan also has a rabies-linked renewal structure in some counties (particularly in western Michigan), where licenses expire based on the month of the dog's rabies vaccination rather than a fixed calendar-year deadline. Berrien and Clinton counties use this system — if you're in one of these counties, your renewal date varies by dog.

Michigan-Specific Rules
- Spay/neuter proof required every renewal: Unlike most states where you prove it once, Michigan requires documentation of spay/neuter status at every renewal to receive the lower fee.
- New residents: If you move to Michigan from another state with a currently licensed dog, you must license immediately — no grace period for out-of-state arrivals.
- New dogs: 30-day rule applies. If a new dog or newly acquired dog is after the February 28 deadline, new owners have 30 days to purchase at non-delinquent rates. After 30 days, delinquent fees apply.
- City vs. county: Some incorporated Michigan cities issue their own dog licenses separate from the county. The City of Westland, for example, uses its own City Clerk system. Verify your specific address to confirm whether you license through the county or your city.
