๐ Bucks County Dog License โ Quick Facts (2026)
Pennsylvania Dog License Law โ What Bucks County Dog Owners Must Know
Under the Pennsylvania Dog Law (3 Pa. C.S. ยง 459-201 et seq.), every dog three months of age or older must be licensed in the county where it resides. The license year runs from January 1 through December 31. Unlike many Ohio counties, Pennsylvania's deadline is January 1 โ meaning you need to purchase the new year's license by the first day of the year, not January 31.
In Bucks County, licenses are issued by the County Treasurer's Office and by a network of authorized agents โ veterinary offices, auto tag agencies, and other local businesses. The most convenient option for many residents is purchasing online through the county's authorized portal at doglicenses.us/PA/Bucks.
Pennsylvania significantly updated its Dog Law in 2023, resulting in a fee increase that took effect in stages. For 2026, the annual fee is $10.80 for all dogs โ the previous $2 discount for spayed or neutered dogs has been eliminated. A new $1 increase is expected in 2027.
Bucks County Dog License Fees for 2026
| License Type | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Annual โ standard | $10.80 | Available online, by mail, in person, or through authorized agents |
| Annual โ senior (age 65+) | $6.80 | Owner must be 65+. Proof of age required. Available at Treasurer's Office and agents. |
| Annual โ person with disability | $6.80 | Proof of disability required. In-person or mail only (not online). |
| Lifetime license (microchip/tattoo required) | $52.80 | Dog must have permanent ID. Available by mail or in person at Treasurer's Office only. |
| Agent convenience fee | + $0.50 | Added to fees when purchasing through authorized agents |
The $10.80 fee includes $1.70 in postage and administrative costs that remain within Bucks County โ the rest funds the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement, which inspects kennels, investigates dog bites, and funds shelters statewide.

Bucks County Dog License Unique Details
A few things that are specific to Bucks County and not obvious from the state-level information:
- Lifetime licenses require a PIV form: Unlike annual licenses, the Permanent Identification Verification form requires a veterinarian's original signature confirming the microchip or tattoo. Plan at least a vet visit in advance if pursuing this route.
- Tags mailed, not handed out: Online and mail-in applicants receive their tag by mail. If you apply in person at the Treasurer's Office, you receive the tag on the spot. At agent locations, some give out tags immediately, others mail them โ ask before you apply.
- Deceased dogs: If your dog has passed away and you want to remove them from future renewal notices, email the Bucks County Treasurer's Office at treasurer@buckscounty.org with the most recent license number or address. This prevents confusing renewal notices.
- Renewal notices: Annual license renewal notices are mailed in the fall before the renewal window opens. These are a courtesy โ you're legally required to renew even if you don't receive a notice.
The 30-Day Rule for New Dogs in Pennsylvania
If you purchase, adopt, or receive a dog younger than three months old, Pennsylvania law requires you to license the dog at the time of transfer โ even if it's under three months old. For dogs acquired at three months or older that aren't yet licensed, you have 30 days from the acquisition date to license them. The penalty for failing to license ($100โ$500) applies per dog, per violation.
Dog wardens in Pennsylvania make unannounced neighborhood canvasses. If your dog is found unleashed or at large without a current license tag, you can expect a citation. Licensed dogs also have a much higher return rate when lost โ the license tag is directly tied to your contact information in the county system.
